Snake Island (Ilha da Queimada Grande) is located about 31 miles off the coast of Brazil. It is so dangerous that people are forbidden to visit it.
Snake Island is considered the deadliest island in the world.
It covers only 0.17 square miles. One snake lives per square meter, and these snakes are among the most dangerous animals in the world.
It is a type of viper, a golden snake, which is extremely endangered. Their main source of food is birds, and they can kill a human within an hour, reports Metro.co.uk.
Hops stayed on this island when the sea level started rising and separated from Brazil during the last ice age.
The venom of these snakes is five times stronger than the venom of land snakes.
The Brazilian government has declared the area strictly off-limits to tourists. However, some people are allowed to visit it – selected scientists, members of the Brazilian Navy, and certain journalists.
Journalist Tara Brown, who works for the Nine News TV channel, visited Snake Island in 2019. She stated that the Brazilian fishermen told her that this trip was not a good idea.
“There are legends about a whole family being killed there, as well as about pirates who buried treasure there and snakes guarding it. The fishermen said they never went there because if they did, they would die,” she said.
It is estimated that between 2,000 and 4,000 golden snakes live on this island.
